The Need for a Scholarship Database and Tracking for Sustainable Funding in Nigerian Universities

Image
The world is made up of numbers, as Pythagoras would say and data is the new oil of the 21 st century. Data and datasets are the only metrics to measure progress, it is the foundation of Machine Learning-Artificial Intelligence and the cornerstone of all logical driven decision making. What separates a rich and poor nation? Up-to-date data about the state of the nation, the welfare of the citizens, births, deaths, movement of people, goods and services. In academics and universities across the world, the same applies. How are universities ranked? How are funding allocated? How do we track the extent of social investments made in the students and research in our institutions? It is all data; data will always speak for itself. In Nigeria, this is far from reality. Take the case of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical sciences (FPS), we do not have a real-time database of which of our students have benefitted from any kind of funding, what those ...

Why many did not scale the document verification-review stage

I know that many applicants would be wondering at what went wrong with their applications. Trust us, nothing that cannot be explained, went wrong. Here, I will give a brief breakdown on why so many applicants did not pass the document verification-review stage into the interview stage. To start, I have categorized the possible problems into four (4): Missing or Incomplete Transcript. Transcripts of records were required to be uploaded in PDF format during the applications. Also, it should bear the courses offered in the last year (or at least 70% of the courses), dated and stamped with the official records sheet of your department. Deviations from this meant one thing: the document is invalid and the applicant was screened out. Many applicants fall into this category. Missing or Incomplete Recommendation Letter (RL) The RL was meant to serve two purposes: a.   Someone that can attest to your studentship and ready to tell of your character, diligence and commitment to your...

Transcripts in Nigerian Varsities and why we extended the Deadline for the Elechi Scholarships (Maiden Edition)

Image
To ensure that every eligible student has sufficient time to obtain their transcripts, the registration deadline has been extended by two weeks from the initial deadline of 28th of February 2026 New deadline is now  March 14th, 2026 . What has necessitated this change? L ife and its quality can be tracked by a set of metrics. These metrics hold direct correlations to intended outcomes, and are unmistakably judgmental. The University systems have chosen the “Transcripts of Records” as its highest detailed assessment of the students’ performance, at least at the undergraduate level of studies. This report can be followed from semester to semester, and throughout the years of study, till graduation, to track academic health. Yes, the student knows their results after each semester, but the transcripts from the University is an official document with a seal of authenticity. To the school, the guardians, the funders and the public's eyes, the fate of the students hangs on th...

Who should pay for this (1)?

The University is centered around the three pillars of:     Teaching    Research    Community or Social development At the foundation of these is teaching. As custodians of knowledge, they represent the highest level of arbitration on science, arts, skills, values and culture. They pass this down to students, through structured curricula and teaching modules.  Closely tied to, and also the foundation of all teaching is research. Universities and research institutions are the incubators of knowledge and ideas that advance societal growth and civilization. Every societal problem should be studied, theorized, investigated, documented and piped back for testing and validation in the real-world--- this is what research entails Community or social development are not separate responsibilities per se.
