In this country, Nigeria,
we must not become so accustomed to cutting corners and falsifying
documents just to avoid following due process. What many people fail to realize
is that scholarship awarding
bodies anticipate such actions and pay close
attention to detecting fraudulent applications. Once any form of forgery is
discovered in your documents, you are automatically disqualified, regardless of
your qualifications or good motivation.
Simply follow
the instructions provided. If you are asked to obtain a recommendation letter
from your head of departments,
make every legitimate effort to get it from him or her. Where it becomes
impossible due to time constraints or unavoidable circumstances, write
officially to the awarding
body and explain your situation. If your
explanation is genuine, they may consider your case or guide you appropriately. Forging a document will only ruin your
chances, and trust me, they will most likely detect it.
While blatant forgery is a serious
crime, some students belong to a second category of “Forgery by carelessness”
Your documents should never
create the slightest impression of being manipulated or forged. Whenever you
notice any inconsistency especially in names, registration number, contact details, dates, letterheads and or signatures, clarify it properly
by writing to the appropriate channel or avoid making such a costly mistake
altogether. Remember, you will not be physically present to defend yourself
while your documents are being reviewed, so your application must establish
your authenticity beyond reasonable doubt.
It is truly
heartbreaking to see genuinely deserving candidates lose scholarship
opportunities because of the act of forgery or carelessness.
Let integrity and carefulness be your guide!
