Transcripts in Nigerian Varsities and why we extended the Deadline for the Elechi Scholarships (Maiden Edition)

To ensure that every eligible student has sufficient time to obtain their transcripts, the registration deadline has been extended by two weeks from the initial deadline of 28th of February 2026

New deadline is now March 14th, 2026.

What has necessitated this change?

Life and its quality can be tracked by a set of metrics. These metrics hold direct correlations to intended outcomes, and are unmistakably judgmental.

The University systems have chosen the “Transcripts of Records” as its highest detailed assessment of the students’ performance, at least at the undergraduate level of studies. This report can be followed from semester to semester, and throughout the years of study, till graduation, to track academic health.

Yes, the student knows their results after each semester, but the transcripts from the University is an official document with a seal of authenticity. To the school, the guardians, the funders and the public's eyes, the fate of the students hangs on this document. In other words, students depend on this document for parental appraisal, renewal of funding, securing scholarships, transferring to another program, and submission of applications, among others.

Apart from releasing the results at the end of each semester, how readily are these documents made available by Nigeria Universities to their students?

I will use the University of Nigeria as a case study, since I was once a lion (now a super lion).

The University of Nigeria has a dedicated platform for transcript application by alumni. By this, it only applies to graduates, and not available for current students. This even comes at a fee (which is still unjustifiable for students online version of the transcript) and takes three to four weeks (3-4 weeks) to land in your mail.

For current students, there is a section available in their portal for result updates that can be downloaded as a pdf. Alternatives are hard copies delivered through the departmental exam officer, signed and stamped by the faculty dean. Both methods heavily rely on early release of results by professors, which are not always the case.

Many other Nigerian varsities do not even have a centralized application platform for alumni nor for current students, according to reports from colleagues. Retrieval of transcript from this varsities is a nightmare, just to be conservative.

How can this be addressed?

  1. Strict timeline for release of results from the previous semester must be enforced and followed.
  2. Digitalization of these results and the availability in the student portal must be a priority at the end of every semester, or just before the beginning of the next semester.
  3. Removal of financial barriers to transcripts especially for students online copies.
  4. Clear communication to students, both current and alumni, on availability of their transcripts and how they can easily have access to it.

The University of Nigeria have already enforced Step 2, and following up on the other steps will yield more positive results.

Thank you
